5 Most Overlooked Occupational Courses in Public Colleges
We covered five most overlooked occupational courses at South African public TVET colleges, what you learn in each one and which colleges to check for 2027 enrolment.
Occupational Courses at Public Colleges in South Africa
Not everyone wants to study business management, office administration or engineering at a TVET college. Some students would rather learn a trade, work in tourism or start a small business of their own.
The good news is that public TVET colleges offer occupational courses in fields that students do not always consider when choosing what to study after matric. Some prepare you for work in construction, while others cover farming, welding and tourism.
I found five options with course information published by public colleges. I've included the actual course pages so you can read about the programmes, check the entry requirements and find out where they are offered.
1. Poultry Farmer at Coastal KZN TVET College
Have you ever considered studying poultry farming instead of looking for an ordinary office job? It is an option worth investigating, especially if you are interested in agriculture or want to learn how a poultry business operates.
Coastal KZN TVET College offers an Occupational Certificate: Poultry Farmer at its Umlazi-V Campus.
The college lists the course at NQF Level 5, with a stated duration of one year, with an optional additional 18 months.
The course covers more than looking after chickens. Students learn about poultry breeding, feeding, disease prevention, housing, record-keeping, farm management and selling agricultural products. These are important parts of running a poultry operation because keeping birds healthy is only one part of the business. You also need to manage costs, monitor production and understand how to sell what you produce.
The college lists Grade 12 or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification, including Mathematical Literacy, as the minimum entry requirement.
You should be aware that the programme is self-funded, so students should budget for the fees rather than assume NSFAS will pay for it.
You may also consider looking at SA Bursaries That Fund Private College Students.
After completing relevant training and gaining experience, you could look for work on a poultry farm or explore starting a small poultry business. Starting your own operation will still require money for housing, feed, equipment, chicks and other running costs. That is why we covered another topic like TVET College Courses That Can Lead to Self-Employment.

2. Tourist Information Officer at Coastal KZN TVET College
If you enjoy learning about places, helping people and communicating with visitors, you may want to look at the Tourist Information Officer qualification.
Coastal KZN TVET College lists this course at Swinton Campus and Appelsbosch Campus. it takes two years and is offered at NQF Level 5.
The course covers South African destinations, tourism products, customer service, travel information, itinerary planning, tourism operations and digital skills. Students also learn how to help customers with travel information, prepare quotations and handle reservations-related work.
This is different from simply studying tourism theory. The course is aimed at work involving visitors and travel information, where people need accurate answers about destinations, attractions, transport and activities.
The college lists Grade 9 or an equivalent qualification with Mathematics as its minimum entry requirement. It also notes that knowing another language can be an advantage.
Possible places of work include tourist information centres, travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and tourism-related businesses.
Getting a job will depend on vacancies, experience and the requirements of each employer.

3. Welder at Boland College
Welding is often overlooked by students who think college courses must lead to office work. However, welding is used in construction, manufacturing, metal fabrication and other industries where metal parts need to be joined.
Boland College offers an Occupational Certificate: Welder at NQF Level 4. The college lists the programme as three years long, with 372 credits.
Students learn different welding processes, how to read welding drawings and specifications, how to handle materials and equipment safely, and how to check the quality of their work.
The published entry requirements are Grade 9, ABET Level 4 or NQF Level 1 with Mathematics. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, and the college states that Mathematics and Science are compulsory subjects in Grade 9.
The course can lead towards work as a fillet welder, plate welder or pipe welder, depending on the skills and assessments completed.
Further experience and relevant requirements may be needed for specialised welding jobs.
One detail worth understanding is that completing the classroom and workshop components is not necessarily the same as completing the full qualification. Boland College explains that the programme includes a final external assessment, known as the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA), for the qualification.

4. Plumber at Coastal KZN TVET College
Plumbing is another course to consider if you want to learn a trade that is used in homes, businesses and construction projects.
Coastal KZN TVET College offers an Occupational Certificate: Plumber at its Umlazi-V Campus. The college lists the qualification at NQF Level 4, with a duration of three years and 360 credits.
The course covers water supply systems, drainage, sewerage, hot and cold water systems, plumbing tools and equipment, and safety requirements. Students learn how to install, maintain and test plumbing systems rather than only studying the theory behind them.
The entry requirement listed by the college is an NQF Level 3 qualification, equivalent to the relevant N2 or NC(V) Level 3 knowledge areas in Engineering Mathematics, Science and Building Drawings.
After training, plumbers may work with plumbing contractors, construction companies, maintenance teams or municipal water departments. Some experienced plumbers also go on to run their own businesses.
This is a course where it helps to look closely at the full requirements before applying. Plumbing involves safety rules and technical work, and completing a course does not automatically give you permission to carry out every type of plumbing job independently.

5. Boilermaker at Northlink TVET College
Boilermaking is a trade used in industries that work with metal structures, equipment, tanks and other fabricated components. It may be worth considering if you enjoy technical work and want to learn how metal parts are measured, prepared, shaped and assembled.
Northlink TVET College offers an Occupational Certificate: Boilermaker at its Bellville Campus. Its January 2026 programme information lists the qualification at NQF Level 4, with 395 credits and a three-year duration.
The programme combines college learning with workplace experience. Northlink explains that apprentices rotate between the college and a workplace as they progress through the programme. This gives learners time to study the technical side of the trade and learn how the work is done in an actual working environment.
The published entry requirements include Grade 9 and an age of at least 16. Applicants must also be eligible for registration as an apprentice with an employer, and an occupational medical examination is required before registration.
This last point is important. The programme is not simply a course where anyone can register directly and start attending classes. Northlink's information says the college assists candidates with employer placement before they start the apprenticeship programme.
Qualified boilermakers may work in engineering workshops, manufacturing, construction, mining-related industries and other workplaces that use fabricated metal structures.

Which of these courses is worth considering?
That depends on the kind of work you want to do.
If you are interested in agriculture and would like to understand how poultry production works, look at the Poultry Farmer qualification. If you enjoy travel and communicating with people, the Tourist Information Officer course may suit you. Welding, plumbing and boilermaking are options for students who prefer learning a trade.
The courses also have different entry requirements and costs. For example, Coastal KZN's Poultry Farmer course requires Grade 12 or an equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification, while its published Tourist Information Officer entry requirement is Grade 9 or equivalent with Mathematics. Boland College's welding programme has its own subject requirements, and Northlink's boilermaker programme involves an apprenticeship with an employer.
Before you apply, read the course page linked under the programme you want. Look at the entry requirements, duration, campus and funding information, then use the college's official application information to find out whether the next intake is open.

The main point is that you do not have to choose the same course as everyone else.
Look at the work each programme prepares you for, check that you meet the requirements and choose a course that fits your interests and circumstances.
